Managing grief before the Christmas season can be especially challenging for those who have lost a loved one over the year. At Belvedere we recognise the time leading up to December can raise a mix of feelings related to grief. As we prepare for our annual Memorial Day for our residents, staff and their families who have lost a loved one, we share our tips to manage this emotional time and take care of yourself and others around you.
It’s important to recognise that it’s normal to feel sadness and give yourself permission to experience those emotions without guilt.
Make sure you’re not alone. Share your feelings with trusted friends, family members, or a therapist. Talking about your grief can help you process emotions and remind you that you’re not alone.
Engage in activities that nourish your mind and body. Being kind to yourself during this time can provide comfort and help you manage your grief in a way that honours both your loss and your well-being.
If certain celebrations or gatherings feel too overwhelming, it’s okay to decline invitations or modify your involvement. You can create new rituals that feel more comfortable, such as lighting a candle in memory of loved ones or spending quiet time reflecting.
Belvedere’s Memorial Day is held every year in November to celebrate the memory of loved ones who have passed away. We invite families of our residents and our staff to participate in our program. Together, we read poems and enjoy heartfelt musical performances and reflections by lighting candles. Importantly, we celebrate life and reflect on joyous memories of our most cherished.
